The Atlantic Council of Canada is pleased to announce the launch of its 2011-2012 Secondary School Essay Competition. This contest will offer high school students the opportunity to become more involved in the study of Euro-Atlantic issues and we look forward to reading their perspectives and points-of-view. The winning essays will be published in the Atlantic Council’s newsletter and on our website. Winners will also receive a membership in the Atlantic Council of Canada.

“Canada and the New Middle East” 2012 Conference
The Atlantic Council of Canada and the Advocates for Civil Liberties are proud to present our conference on “Canada and the New Middle East” for March 28, 2012.
Topics that the conference will focus on include:
- Canadian Economic and Energy Interests in the New Middle East
- Canadian National Security in the New Middle East
- Canada and the Arab Spring
- Canada’s Human Rights Challenges in the New Middle East

This year, the Atlantic Council’s Annual Tribute Dinner will celebrate two outstanding Canadians. We will be awarding the 2011 St. Laurent Award and 2011 Award for Exceptional Contribution to International Peace and Security.
Named after the 12th Prime Minister of Canada, Louis St. Laurent, who was Prime Minster when Canada signed the Washington Treaty establishing NATO in 1949, the St. Laurent Award recognizes the outstanding contribution at home or abroad of a Canadian towards the ideals and principles of maintaining peace and order that are enshrined in the Washington Treaty.
The Annual Award for Exceptional Contribution to International Peace and Security recognizes a Canadian who has made a significant contribution to international peace and security, and to furthering the values the founding members set forth in the North Atlantic Treaty: “to safeguard the freedom, common heritage and civilization of their peoples, founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law.
Maritime Security Spring 2012 Conference
The Atlantic Council of Canada is excited to announce that our Spring 2012 Conference, slated for May 30, 2012, will examine the interconnected and ever-changing dimensions of Canadian and global maritime security. Topics of discussion will include:
- The future of the Royal Canadian Navy and Coastguard
- Disruptions of the global commons: Piracy and maritime terrorism
- Arctic sovereignty and security
- US-Canadian maritime security cooperation
The conference will bring together expertise and insights from the academic, military, public, and private sectors, creating an informed maritime security dialogue that is desperately needed in central Canada.
